1 〔立ったままで死ぬこと〕 dying on one's feet.

●弁慶の立ち往生 “the last stand” of Benkei, who died on his feet.

立ち往生を遂げる manage to die on one's feet.

2 〔動けなくなるさま〕 a standstill; a stalling; 〔(計画などが)頓挫すること〕 a setback; a deadlock; an impasse.
~する come [be brought] to a standstill; stand still; be held up; be stalled; become stuck; 〔頓挫する〕 be deadlocked; be left standing in its tracks.

●雪で立ち往生する come to a standstill [be stalled, be stuck] in snow; be snowed up; be snowbound

・列車は吹雪のため立ち往生した. The train was stuck [held up, brought to a standstill] by a snowstorm.

・停電で電車が何台も立ち往生していた. As a result of a power failure several trains were held up [came to a stop].

・車が泥にはまって立ち往生した. My car got stuck in some mud.

・資金不足で計画は立ち往生した. The plan stopped dead in its tracks [came to a standstill] because of insufficient funds.

・改革は党内の紛糾のため立ち往生している. Reform came to a standstill because of interparty entanglements.

3 〔当惑し何もできなくなるさま〕
~する stand speechless; be unable to move [speak]; stop in one's tracks.

●彼は演説の途中で言葉を忘れて立ち往生した. Midway through his speech he forgot his words and stopped in his tracks.
